Not being a native Londoner, the capital has always held a certain fascination for me. Not only is London packed with history, popular sights and importantly, pubs, clubs, theaters and all manner of entertainment, but the people are really nice and seem more than willing to help a lost soul in need of advice or directions.
It was with some excitement and anticipation, therefore, that I set off by train recently, to Victoria Station. I had decided to make this a memorable occasion and treat myself to a few days of indulgence. I was going to book into a luxury London hotel, see all the sights that I could and generally 'paint the town red' – I had worked hard all year and I was really going to enjoy this!
I had booked myself into the top 5 star Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in Knightsbridge because I wanted to be in the heart of the City. I had received an early boost when I booked, because far from being prohibitive cost wise, the pricing was a very pleasant surprise indeed – more cash for the 'entertainment' coffers'!
A quick taxi ride from Victoria Station, saw me safely to the doors of the Jumeirah Carlton and as soon as I walked in, I knew that I had made the perfect choice. The interior was everything you would expect and when I got to my room, well, that did not disappoint either.
I quickly unpacked my bags and was out of the hotel heading up Sloan Street, to Hyde Park only a few minutes away. The day was gloriously sunny and before long I was on the eastern side of the Serpentine, sitting in The Dell (a large terrace and garden) enjoying a well deserved beer. I was extremely lucky because by chance my visit coincided with one of the many musical events staged in the park, so as evening drew in, I happily made my way back to my hotel.
After an afternoon of great entertainment, my mind now turned to matters of great sustenance. Happily the hotel restaurant was more than up to the job – in fact the cuisine was so sumptuous, that yes, as you would expect I went completely overboard and with night drawing in, the final thing on my mind was a quick nightcap before retiring. A visit to the hotels' opulent Champagne Lounge saw me right, before I gratefully turned in for the night.
The next day, I woke inexplicably early and resolved to try some of the hotels' facilities. I had a choice of using the gym (too energetic just now), the steam room (nice but a tad hot), the sauna (likewise), the Jacuzzi (maybe), but in the end decided on the pool for a relaxed swim . When I got to the pool I was just amazed – the pool was sensational !! There were palm trees everywhere and it looked very much like George Michael's video of Club Tropicana. After a great breakfast, I was once again on my way to explore the Metropolis.
Thus, I passed away the reminder of my break, always gratefully returning to the Jumeirah, my home from home. The entire experience was beyond words, and a very major part was played by the superb luxury hotel that I had been most fortunately to find.
I found that a stay in a luxury London hotel is certainly within reach of anyone and I guarantee that it will change an ordinary trip to London into an occasion never to be forgotten.
